The NHS has outlined an initiative which is hoped will combat the rise of type 2 diabetes across the UK.

Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition that causes a person’s blood sugar levels to become elevated to potentially dangerous levels. It can lead to serious health concerns. Complications can also lead to coronary disease. Approximately 24,000 deaths occur in the UK annually from poorly managed type 2 diabetes.

The initiative will include education on diabetes as well as advice on lifestyle changes to reduce the risk of developing the condition. It will be implemented as part of a wider programme outlined by the Chief Executive of NHS England. It will also see more funding given to training specialist nurses, care teams, clinical staffing and even digital innovation. The NHS Package

The new plans will include the following:

A £15 million programme to help prevent type 2 diabetes.
Expansion of the prevention programme across the country.
£45 million to be made available for investment into the research and treatment of the condition.
Improved care for patients with diabetic foot conditions.
Ensuring access to specialist clinical staff, and nurse teams when required.

It is also hoped that through a combination of education and lifestyle changes, the number of people in the UK diagnosed with the condition will begin to decrease. Currently, it costs the NHS an estimated £9.8 billion a year, despite being avoidable in many cases.
