Reducing the Risk of Mould in Your Bathroom

One of the most common places to find mould in your home is in the bathroom. With lots of steam, condensation and warm temperatures, it becomes the perfect habitat to support mould. When left untreated, mould can cause damage to both your health and to your bathroom – preventing mould is always better than trying to get rid of it once it has appeared. Here are some of the ways that you can reduce the risk of mould forming in your bathroom…

Improving the Ventilation

Allowing air to flow freely through the bathroom helps to prevent a build-up of moisture on walls and other surfaces which then stops mould from developing in the first place.  If you have a window in your bathroom, leaving it open for a bit after you have had a bath or shower helps to let the steam out and let fresh air in, but if you don’t make sure that you have an extractor fan in there. Leaving the bathroom door open also helps to get the air circulating.

Dry Surfaces

When surfaces are damp, this gives mould the opportunity to grow on them. Surfaces can become damp with steam getting everywhere, so wiping them down afterwards helps to prevent mould from forming on them.

Using Sealant

If the sealant around your bath and shower is cracked, worn and peeling this also provides a place for mould to grow and can also then cause damage to your bathroom, allowing water to seep into places where it shouldn’t get.
